Artists and the Environment Go out to walk with a painter, and you shall see for the first time groups, colours, clouds, and keepings, and shall have the pleasure of discovering resources in a hitherto barren ground. RALPH WALDO EMERSON The articles on these pages derive from interviews with New Zealand artists conducted by Patricia Sarr and Tom Turner, both of whom, on leave from Friends of the Earth in the United States, toured this country in the early months of 1977, talking to many artists and environmentalists. All texts are based on tape-recordings: with the sole exception of that by Colin McCahon, which was written especially for this issue of Art New Zealand.
Patricia Sarr is designer and production manager of Friends of the Earth's fortnightly paper in the United States, Not Man Apart; Tom Turner edited the paper for six years, and, in July 1977, he returned to the States to take up the position of Administrative Director. |
