RITA ANGUS died in 1970 after a life of single-minded devotion to the art of painting. By the last years of her life her position as one of New Zealand's leading twentieth century artists was beyond dispute. In this issue, some of Rita Angus's friends have contributed impressions of her, and John Tarlton has added a brief outline of her career.

LEO BENSEMANN Rita Angus, 1937 conté drawing |
In 1969, Marti Friedlander met Rita Angus and was given permission to take a unique series of photographs. Three of these, never before published, are reproduced in this issue: on the cover and on pages 12 and 13 - together with Marti Friedlander's brief description of her meeting with the artist. Reproduced is a conté drawing of Rita Angus, made by a friend and fellow-artist, Leo Bensemann, in 1937.
